According to ancient Chinese belief, roofs held a place between the mortal and spirit worlds and so eaves and ridges were often decorated with gods, animals, or mythical beasts. This celestial roof tile depicts an animated fish who protects and attracts good fortune. It was made by an artisan over a century ago in the Zhejiang region of China and has a colored wucai glaze.
