We’re experts, editors, curators and collaborators. We consider ourselves lucky to spend our days sharing and learning with designers, artists, architects and others with inspiring curiosity, talent and taste. For 20 years, we’ve provided our clients with unparalleled Asian antiques, contemporary art, coveted craftsmanship and a thoughtful lens on design. Our collection is founded on the integrity of masterful joinery, ancient craft techniques and an edited mix of modern and traditional style. Every item is authentic—historically and geographically—and meticulously cared for by our artisans and conservators.

We’re also translators, making meaningful connections between East and West, old and new. We reinterpret trunks as nightstands, screens as room dividers, daybeds as sofas. The same form carries many possibilities and purposes within it. We love bringing the past into the present, honoring history and integrating it into the way we live now.

Betsy Nathan was born a collector. Her mother Ann, a renowned Chicago gallerist, surrounded the family with an eclectic mix of folk and fine art, contemporary paintings, handcrafted furniture, and pieces picked up on their travels.

In the early 1990s, Betsy moved to Beijing to study Mandarin. She met a group of legendary Chinese furniture experts who became her mentors. Her education consisted of studies in the principles of Asian history, philosophy and design—with more than a few forays into the streets and alleys of provincial China.

Betsy opened her first Chicago showroom in 1997. She continues to travel in search of extraordinary objects, and Pagoda Red evolves from her ongoing education in modern and traditional design and ideas. Betsy lives in the Chicago area with her husband and four sons.
