Floral Painted Coffer

Dating from 1900, this antique pine cabinet from Mongolia is beautifully embellished with intricate floral designs and gilded filigree. Concealed hinges and joinery give the cabinet a continuous, flat face that encouraged its prolific decoration. Distinctively Eastern in its aesthetic, there is also something charming and rustic about it that resembles Western folk design. Commissioned as part of a woman’s dowry or used as a family altar, the cabinet provides ample storage with two single and double doors opening to a single shelf.
