Over the centuries, Chinese woodworkers perfected furniture making to a true art. Strategically fitting together pieces of wood, these artisans achieved beautiful and functional designs without using a single nail or bit of glue. This elegant table made around 1850 showcases this workmanship in its floating top and mortise-and-tenon joinery. Hoof feet, wonderfully abstracted into square scrolls, and an airy apron articulated with cutout lozenges, attest as well to the artisan’s keen aesthetic sensibilities. Scaled large to suit an artist’s needs, this table was ideal for spreading out large scrolls. Today, it translates wonderfully as a generous desk or dining table.
