Stools were the most ubiquitous and practical seating found in homes, gardens and shops in China. In the street or the garden, they were easy to carry and move. Used by merchants as seating for themselves and their customers, they have many forms and constructions. This three legged version, most likely from a simple village home, was made using traditional mortise and tenon joinery. The pegs that connect the top to the legs are visible on the wonderfully aged seat, adding further character to this sculptural stool.
