The grand scale of this 19th-century coffer suggests it was originally used in a Qing-dynasty home as a family altar. Incense, candles, and fruits would have covered the cabinet top as offerings to the family's ancestors. Such items were stored in the coffer's three top drawers, while the bottom deep storage space was used for textiles, clothing, and everyday items. Each drawer and panel is decorated with intricate woodwork, littered with ruyi scepters for immortality and interlocking coins for prosperity. Cloaked in a beautifully aged lacquer finish, this monumental sideboard has a rich character that only time can produce.
