Lacquer must be applied slowly, brushed on in long fluid motions. A high-quality finish may take thirty or more coats, and so creating a cabinet like this is extremely time-consuming and costly. This 150-year old Elmwood cabinet from Northern China has a dramatic beauty with simple, clean lines that sweep upward, brass hardware, and rounded moldings that resemble noodles and give the design its unique name.
