The basic set up for traditional home-based ancestor worship was an altar table upon which ancestral tablets or images of ancestors and offerings were placed. Sometimes the altar was supplemented with a shrine such as this cabinet from 1900, which may have housed a buddha or ancestral figure. With its compact, box-like shape and simple double doors, this lacquered cabinet provided a safe, if unassuming, place to store its contents. Today, it is ideally suited next to a bed or sofa--making a quiet statement with endless stories to tell.
