Most likely created by artisans of the Hehe peoples of Tanzania, this tripod stool embodies wonderful movement in its sweeping form. Playful lines drawn by graceful arched legs contrast the stool's clean, round surface. Incised chevron patterns fade in and out, clearly marking this stool's years of use. This strong, primitive form is an example of the African aesthetic that inspired European artists as they developed the Abstract Expressionist movement in the early 20th century.
