Calligraphic sweeps of blue bring this mid-19th century apothecary jar to life, adorning its milky white speckled glaze with an arrangement of lotus pods and vines. Emerging from the mud of riverbanks yet pristine and beautiful, the lotus plant is a symbol of purity and perfection, and is considered a sacred Buddhist symbol. Once used in an apothecary to hold ingredients for traditional medicines, the small vessel now takes pride of place simply on its own.
