Senufo Lidded Gourd Vessel

With strips of hide and hand-forged iron staples, Senufo women combined wood and gourd into a lightweight water vessel. While terra cotta was ideal for vessels in the home, this more portable version was best for collecting water. The mixture of so many organic materials and forms provide a wonderful combination of textures. The natural curves of the gourd gently shape and gather into the mouth, before meeting into the lid. Taken together, these features create a sculptural object that calls out to its provincial heritage.
