Out of context, this carved wood hat stand has a curious, octopus-like appearance. Carved with cloud-form flourishes, the folding hat stand displays the opulence of court fashion, where rank and status was expressed through fashion and its accoutrements. During the Qing dynasty, hats were de rigueur for any respectable man and when not in use, were displayed upon beautiful accessories that helped preserve their shapes. As a sculptural wonderment or topped with a cap, this curiosity adds a bit of whimsy to any room.

This hat stand is comprised of two separate interlocking pieces.

From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer.
