Over a century ago, a gifted potter from northern China crafted this organic clay jar out of rich dark river clay mined from the river basins of Asia. The surface is stamped with auspicious symbols: The Tibetan Buddhist endless knot, and the peony, representing Spring and feminine beauty. Left entirely uncolored, the natural progression of the clay has created varying textures of clouded and smooth surfaces. Under natural light, this discoloration makes the pot seem frozen in time, as if the river clay is eternally drying in front of you. The dark streak featured in the first image gives this pot a particularly dramatic presence that separates it from its fellows.
