To the Kwere tribe of Tanzania, finely carved, darkwood staffs such as this one were used as status symbols. Healers, shamans, warriors, and, in this case, female leaders, would carry them to display their power. Here, a woman sits with her knees tucked close to her body. Below the detailed top carving, the staff features finely-etched geometric patterns and spaced bulbs, providing unique texture and form. Mounted on a contemporary steel stand, this female leader sits atop the symbol of her power to create a storied spiritual object.
