Intricate, ethereal and highly textured, the abstract compositions of Japanese mosaic artist Toyoharu Kii reflect a sophisticated approach to the technical art of mosaic making. Classically trained in Florence, Italy, Kii creates his modern mosaics using traditional techniques and materials, including hand-cut Italian marble and Venetian smalti glass. Eschewing the figural in favor of the abstract, his mosaics rely on contrasts of pattern and form to convey complex themes and achieve visual harmony.

In this mosaic entitled “Diary (2301),” Kii uses repetitive patterns to express the passage of time. “It’s a kind of diary,” writes Kii. “Each day has its special event, but from a broader point of view, there’s nothing but monotonous and peaceful days.” Hand-cut tesserae of varied shapes and sizes are arranged in rows like the lines of a book, each short passage telling a unique story. Mounted on a yellow wood board, the abstract mosaic resembles an open notebook and recalls the privilege of a rich and peaceful life. Though each passing day may seem uneventful, all together they reflect a life that is layered, complex and beautiful.
