Although more elaborate decoration would take hold in the Qing dynasty, the Ming-dynasty’s legacy of clean, elegant lines remained a powerful influence as seen in this statuesque scholar’s cabinet from 1900. Made of warm-colored cedar, the cabinet is all square lines save for the gently rounded spandrel at the base. Serene in its simplicity, the cabinet was perfect for a scholar’s studio, opening to shelves and a set of drawers to store the sage’s prized artifacts and artist’s tools.
