Set of Four Yellow Peking Glass Cups and Saucers

These four Peking glass cups and saucers have a rich, deep egg-yolk hue and are shaped to look like lotus blossoms. The skill involved in making them is a bit hidden beneath the surface, so to speak. Peking glass making is a complex art form that dates back to 1696, when the Kangxi Emperor established a glassmaking workshop in the imperial palace. The making of Peking glass starts with a one-color glass base, which is carefully dipped into contrasting colored glass, one layer at a time. Cutting the glass is itself is a highly skilled art form: To create the desired effect, glass makers would expertly cut away parts of the overlaid glass to reveal layers of other colors underneath. Each cup measures 2.5" high X 2" diameter, and each plate measures .75" high X 4.75" diameter.
