Crafted from a gnarled tree root, this container once stored painting scrolls in a scholar’s studio. Popular during the Qing dynasty (1644–1911), such vessels were revered by the intelligentsia for their rustic, organic appearance, bringing to mind the romantic notion of an artist-scholar living amidst nature. This notion is taken one step further by its texture beckoning to be touched.
