The warm tones and active grain of natural elmwood are the focus of this unusually articulated six-door coffer. Made for a provincial home in northern China in the late 19th century, the chest is devoid of any excess decoration or metal hardware, emphasizing instead its strong structural thrust in clear-lacquered wood. Punctuated by a row of doors secured by stepped bolt closures, the chest stresses the horizontal with its overhanging table top, extended apron, and low-lying stretcher bars. We love its emphasis on natural wood and the depth of character earned through decades of use.
