When this unique jar was made in the 1920’s, the world was in the middle of a new artistic movement called Art Deco: it combined many different motifs, including the exotic styles of ancient Egypt, India, and especially China. This design arose from that movement, but also has ancient origins that inspired deco artists—the elegant, baluster form is many centuries old. The jar was made in Zhejiang Province with a lovely persimmon and gilt finish decorated with auspicious cranes.
