Taking months or even years to create, this antique area rug from the 1920s is hand-knotted of soft wool colored by natural dyes in a pastel palette of pink, tan, gold and off-white. At the center of the carpet is a mirrored motif of floral bouquets set against a peach-pink monochrome field. Each arrangement features a porcelain vase on a low stand, backed by scholarly scrolls and filled with peony blossoms. Known as the "King of Flowers," peonies are considered emblems of spring and symbols of beauty and refinement. The central field is surrounded by a neutral border of leaves and peony blossoms.

From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer.
