The Nupe people of Nigeria were known as some of the finest ceramicists in Africa. Everyday objects, like this water vessel, received detailed attention. The vessel's varied textures come from its utilitarian design. The dimples and bands were engraved to give the drinker a better grip, creating rich texture that became handworn over time. The sculptural vessels were traditionally stacked along the inside walls of a traditional home. The inside top rim of this pot shows wear from that expected use.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
