Trained first as a photographer and then as an illustrator, Yoko Tanaka takes a look at life’s quieter moments in her paintings. She chooses a limited palette of soft, smoky tones that give her works a sense of stillness and otherworldliness. With an illustrator’s eye for graphic impact, she repeats forms to imbue her painting “Marriage in Spring” with a sense of the bridal couple’s joy. Poised on unicycles, the whimsical pair joins to clasp a bouquet, the shape of their wheels repeated as flowers, as the bride’s hair ornament and enlarged as abstract shapes.
