This petite ivory case is an antique French visiting card box crafted in the late 19th century. A progenitor to the modern business card, visiting cards were popular among high society during the Victorian Era as a status symbol to leave behind while making house calls. The calling card box is fashioned from ivory and wire inlay and features a delicate garden tableau that depicts a bird drinking from a fountain. Reminiscent of a cigarette case, the box hinges open to reveal a wooden interior lined with red velvet.

From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer.

Minor losses to ivory exterior and wire inlay.
