Snuff, a mixture of powdered tobacco, herbs, and spices, was introduced to China by Western diplomats in the 17th century. The opportunity for ranking members of Chinese society to customize their snuff bottles made them favorite collectibles. The carp and lotus blossom featured here are symbols of wealth and purity, speaking to the character of the bottle's owner. This bottle is one piece from a collection of trade objects we recently acquired from one of our favorite artists. During his travels around the world, he purchased items whose stories, forms, finishes and culture would go on to inspire his later work. From that larger collection, we curated spirited items that inspire us and highlight the cross-cultural nature that defines PAGODA RED's design aesthetic
