A lustrous brown glaze coats the slender tapered form of this late 19th-century kitchen jar. As evidenced by the glazed interior, the jar was once used daily in a Qing-dynasty kitchen for fermenting foods and condiments. The tapered jar features wide, sloped shoulders and a constricted neck with a thick, rounded lip. The warm brown glaze was layered atop a darker underglaze, creating a subtle color block on the lower half of the vessel. The opaque finish is smooth to the touch, textured only slightly by the banded surface of the ceramic form.
