This impressive glazed vessel dates to the early 17th century and was used to store wine and spirits made from rice and other grains. The Ming-dynasty jar has an elegant, tapered form and is beautifully glazed with neutral earth-tones in a style characteristic of cizhou ware. Loosely brushed characters decorate the shoulders and sides, painted in warm browns atop a creme-white slip base. The characters are surrounded by expressive brushwork in stylized patterns of scales, petals and vines. Marked with wear and imperfections, the large jar has only become more beautiful with age, a testament to the timelessness of handmade pottery.
