The stool is a central fixture of Chinese furniture culture. Found in a variety of materials and forms, the stool transcends class lines, as much at home in the provincial courtyard as it is in the grand hall of a wealthy estate. Whether worked from fine hardwood or cobbled together from wood scraps, the ever-practical stool finds its place in all corners of the home.

This pair of gorgeous hardwood stools are shaped in a traditional drum form first popularized during the Song dynasty (960-1279). Each stool features a rounded seat and five legs that bow outwards to match the curved shape of a drum, each carved with archaistic dragon scrollwork. Bands of imitation boss-head nails ring the seats like those used to stretch hide across an actual drum. Darkened with a warm, red-brown stain, the stools beautifully showcase the tight grain of their hardwood construction and elevate their surroundings with quiet elegance.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
