Apple Puzzle Pot

This petite apple teapot is a playful early 20th century example of a Chinese puzzle pot, also known as a reversed flowing pot. Lacking a lid, the central chamber is filled through a concealed hole at the bottom of the teapot. A narrow channel running vertically ensures that when turned upright, not a drop of tea falls from the pot. However, should the pot be overfilled, tea will flow out from the base, making a mess for the user. The deceptive design has delighted tea drinkers for centuries, and is often used to illustrate lessons on moderation.
