Chinese artisans often weave stories and symbolism into their furniture designs. This table was designed with eight sides because the Mandarin word for “eight” sounds likes the word for prosperity. A table with eight sides was not common to find during the 19th century in Northern China. The quality of the workmanship is evident in the concealed mortise and tenon joinery, and finely carved spandrels. One hundred fifty years ago it may have been used as a side table in a Qing Dynasty home.
