This Tibetan thangka, or sacred painting, is over 300 years old. The rich red, green, and blue hues are still incredibly vibrant. The central figure is a Buddha surrounded by goddesses and attendants, amidst a field of hundreds of seated figures. Thangka artists generally worked for private patrons or monasteries. The paintings were commissioned to aid meditation, as a form of prayer, or as tokens of thanksgiving for prayers that were answered. This precious treasure was acquired from a respected collection of thangkas gathered over decades.
