Asian art became a global craze in the 19th century, and many artisans adopted new art forms to appeal to foreign tastes—reverse painting on glass was one such technique. Chinese artisans meticulously copied their designs in reverse onto a pane of glass in oils using an especially delicate brush. This painting from Northern China is 150 years old and depicts a Concubine demurely hiding behind her fan.
