According to ancient Chinese belief, roofs held a place between the mortal and spirit worlds and so eaves and ridges were often decorated with gods, animals, or mythical beasts. This celestial roof tile depicts a phoenix—who protects and attracts good fortune. This tile was made by an artisan over a century ago in the Zhejiang region of China and has a colored wucai glaze.
