Rarely do you see a painted cabinet of this vintage in such flawless condition. This extraordinary cabinet is beautifully painted with images of auspicious birds, butterflies as well as books, scrolls and other treasures found in a scholar’s studio. Likely given as a wedding chest as part of a bride’s dowry, the cabinet’s illustrations bestow peace and good fortune upon the couple. Made in 1875 in Dongbei province in northeast China, this cabinet’s decoration is a particularly well-executed example of the region’s painting style.
