This petite 19th-century stool from China's Shanxi province charms with its small scale and complex construction. Crafted with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, the stool stands proud on four legs linked by two sets of interlocking stretchers, each crossed to resemble the Mandarin character for the number ten. Traces of the stool's original dark lacquer pattern the surface and historic iron repairs lend unexpected charm and character.
