The basic form of this three-tiered box with handle has remained unchanged for a thousand years. Used like the modern lunchbox, each tier of this portable stacking box would have been filled with food and carried around by the handle. Unlike elaborate designs used for ceremonial outings, this early 20th century example made from lacquered bamboo would have been used for travel or daily use. With a richly aged surface, this carrying box is wonderful as a storied decorative object or jewelry box.
