Hand-carved of animal bone, this late 19th-century archer's ring was likely worn by a gentleman-scholar in northern China. Typically carved of jade, Chinese archers wore these rings to protect their thumbs while drawing back a bowstring. Over time, these rings became fashion accessories and a decorative display of status. Rings made of rare organic materials such as horn, bone, and unusual gem stones were the most desirable. This stunning carved-bone ring remains a fashionable accessory even today and fits to ring size 13.
