This early 20th-century table from China's Hebei province charms with its simple design and fantastic character. The provincial table features a plank-top surface atop straight legs linked by simple stretcher bars. Much like the modern butcher block table, this table was intended as a versatile surface in the narrow kitchens along a hútòng, the meandering walkway linking traditional courtyard homes. With little space to spare, this simple table would have been valued in a hútòng home for its functional and compact design. Beautifully worn from a century of use, the wood's expressive grain and rich patina are on full display, adding rustic charm to the home.
