Scroll Box Table

Unlike Western artwork, most Chinese paintings are only meant to be brought out and seen from time to time. Long, elaborate handscrolls painted on paper or silk were rolled up and stored in boxes, like this one. Anticipation and ceremony heightened the experience of slowly unrolling and appreciating the scroll. This black box once held a large Qing Dynasty scroll—the custom brushed steel legs have been added, turning the antique box into a striking, modern piece of furniture.
