This pair of mid-19th century square stools is carved from jumu, an elm wood gathered from the forests of Southern China. They feature elegant round mitered corners with mortise and tenon joinery and stretchers that brilliantly wrap around the legs, referencing bamboo construction. Bamboo is a motif that was popular with literati Chinese society because it expressed humility and aligned with Taoist values of naturalism. Each stool has a rattan top woven by hand in a refined and ancient technique.
