Set with ancestral tablets, religious images, and ritual utensils like censers, candles, and offering plates, long tables such as this were usually placed against the back wall of a reception hall or temple. Sometimes called “wall tables,” such altar tables also displayed precious objects in fine homes. Grandly proportioned, this Qing-dynasty table is judiciously ornamented with subtle everted ends and carved double-ear spandrels. We love this impressive table as a credenza or as adding definition to the back of a sofa.
