Pushed together, this pair of rectangular stools forms a square, hence the name “half stools.” Crafted of jia zhen and beech wood and finished with many coats of hand-applied lacquer, the stools are elegantly appointed with hoof feet and refined Ming-form ladder aprons. Raised seating was introduced to China in the second century A.D., when the Han emperor Lingdi took a shine to the “barbarian” way of seating. The fashion took, and within a few hundred years stools as well as chairs had become common among the elite.
