For much of Chinese history, it was customary to sit on mats on the ground, and it was only relatively recently that people began to use raised seating. The louhan bed is a piece of furniture that evolved from these traditions. A uniquely Chinese furnishing, the versatile louhan bed can be used either as raised seating or in the more ancient mat posture. This early 19th-century striking black lacquered example features scrolled feet, stepped side rails, and an elaborately carved apron. The tightly-woven cane seat would have been done by hand, an intricate process that was a traditional art form in itself.
