This long, narrow bench exemplifies rustic style with its simple design and wonderfully aged surface. Crafted by a Qing-dynasty artisan in China's Shanxi province, the bench would have been used as versatile seating along a hútòng, the meandering walkway linking traditional courtyard homes. The lengthy plank-top surface rests upon simple splayed legs linked by straight stretcher bars. Embracing the notion of “wabi-sabi,” the bench charms with its irregular surface, mottled color, and fascinating array of knots, splits, and nail holes that reveal a century of loving use.
