Pair of Apothecary Chests

It is unusual to find a pair of 19th-century Chinese apothecary chests that have remained together during the past century. Cabinets like this were originally used by doctors to organize and store herbal medicines. Each of the chests has 46 drawers with multiple compartments and paper labels that designate what was stored inside. Some of the drawers even have their original Chinese coin escutcheons. Others were lost over time and have been replaced with small round brass plates made by hand. The cabinets are brilliantly constructed with mortise and tenon joinery and the original lacquer finishes have aged beautifully.
