We still see traces of the finely painted floral vases and eight treasures of the scholar that originally decorated this 19th century black lacquer wucai, or "five-color" square corner cabinet. The motifs symbolize the celebration of knowledge, learning and success. The flush panel doors were designed with extended dowels at the top and bottom that ingeniously fit into the upper and lower frames, freeing the cabinet of the need for surface-mounted hinges that would distract from the beautifully rendered paintings.
