Emblematic of 19th-century Chinese furniture design, this large coffer has thoughtful proportions, select timbers, solid brass hardware, and masterful mortise-and-tenon joinery. The flush panel doors put the focus on the wood, which was lacquered for durability and to bring out the natural character of the wood. The lacquer has aged beautifully over time, lending great character to the original finish.
