This antique chest was carved in the Shanxi region of China over a century ago. It has a handsome, rustic design: with mortise and tenon joinery, hand-wrought iron boss head nail studs and hardware and its finish all beautifully worn with age. In China this might be called an “ancestral” chest because it was intended to be passed down through the generations and used in private family rituals.
