Each front panel of this 19th-century coffer depicts a flower signifying one of the four seasons, a group of blossoms celebrated for centuries in Chinese art and culture. Traditionally, this lacquered pine chest opened from the top to accommodate the general storage needs of a Qing-dynasty household. Thanks to the efforts of our skilled carpenters, the chest now also opens with doors converted from the original painted front panels. Over the past century, the painted flowers have taken on a delicate and ephemeral quality, contrasting nicely with the linear frame of the chest.
