Centuries ago this exquisite Elmwood coffer table would have served as the family’s altar, where they paid respects to revered ancestors. It would also serve as storage, the three drawers and two bi-folding doors concealing drawers and shelves filled with precious silks. It was made 150 years ago in Shanxi Province and is emblematic of Qing Dynasty furniture design: the well-worn ox-blood lacquer finish, flanged top, and original brass hardware.
